Massive and Powerful

All this week I have been reading the headlines about Hurricane Irene. The news have called her “massive and powerful. The headlines earlier in the week were about an earthquake that was felt in Virginia it too was called “massive and powerful”. I couldn’t help but think that the news media has it all wrong.

I believe that God is massive and powerful and it is at His commands that the winds blow and the storms come and it is at His command that the seas calm.

Even the storms in our life are in His hands, we just need to have faith and believe.

Mark 4:39-41
39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

...do not give way to fear

1John 4:18 says this,

18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

I have been dealing with fear most of my life, it’s part of the software that’s been downloaded into me by people or circumstances. I think we all fear at some point in our lives but it just kinda hit me the other day as to just how fearful I can be
.
My son Josh left for Japan the other day and will be gone for 3 months. I was alone for awhile the day he left and fear swept over and through me like a flood. I started thinking about how hard it was going to be for him, especially with the language barriers– I mean he can speak some Japanese but isn’t fluent. I can’t explain what I felt but I started to cry. It was during this time that I realized how much I fear and worry about things.
Then I got mad at myself for doubting God’s good and perfect will. Not only in my life but also in the people I love.

If I say I love God and trust in Him– there should be no fear.

1Peter 3:6 …… do not give way to fear.

As For Me and My House....

Pastor Gary Simons is giving the message today and I think his title, “Sermon on the Amount” goes hand in hand with this week’s thought.

In Joshua 24:15-25 it says;

15 But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”
16 Then the people answered, “Far be it from us to forsake the LORD to serve other gods! 17 It was the LORD our God himself who brought us and our parents up out of Egypt, from that land of slavery, and performed those great signs before our eyes. He protected us on our entire journey and among all the nations through which we traveled. 18 And the LORD drove out before us all the nations, including the Amorites, who lived in the land. We too will serve the LORD, because he is our God.”
19 Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the LORD. He is a holy God; he is a jealous God. He will not forgive your rebellion and your sins. 20 If you forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods, he will turn and bring disaster on you and make an end of you, after he has been good to you.” 21 But the people said to Joshua, “No! We will serve the LORD.” 22 Then Joshua said, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen to serve the LORD.” “Yes, we are witnesses,” they replied. 23 “Now then,” said Joshua, “throw away the foreign gods that are among you and yield your hearts to the LORD, the God of Israel.” 24 And the people said to Joshua, “We will serve the LORD our God and obey him.” 25 On that day Joshua made a covenant for the people, and there at Shechem he reaffirmed for them decrees and laws.

Joshua challenged the Israelites to decide who would be the master of their lives, and we are challenged the same way today. God gives us the choice to serve Him, and either way His unconditional love is still there.
